02 / The story

MARATHON BERLIN.

Flat, fast, historic – few courses in the world have written as much marathon history as these 26.2 miles through Berlin.

The Berlin Marathon is one of the fastest marathon courses in the world. Since 1974 it has run through the German capital – past the Reichstag, the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church and the Victory Column, straight through Tiergarten park, all the way to its iconic finish at the Brandenburg Gate.

The first edition in 1974 was a small amateur race with 286 starters in the Grunewald forest. It wasn't until 1981 that the race moved into central Berlin and became the road race known today. Since German reunification in 1990, the course has run through both former halves of the city – a symbol of a reunited Berlin.

Today the Berlin Marathon is one of the six World Marathon Majors and is considered the fastest marathon course in the world: no other course has produced as many world records.

03 / Race DNA

Records & Numbers.

Between 1998 and 2022 the men's world record was broken in Berlin several times – most recently in 2022 by Eliud Kipchoge with 2:01:09, following his first Berlin world record in 2018 (2:01:39).

Berlin is a record-breaking course for women too: in 2023 Tigist Assefa ran 2:11:53, one of the biggest single improvements in marathon history.

Around 45,000 runners from over 150 countries line up every September – from elite athletes to first-time marathoners.
