What is the Challenge Roth?
The Challenge Roth is one of the oldest and largest long-distance triathlons in the world, held every year in July in Roth, near Nuremberg. Over the full Ironman distance of 226 km – 3.8 km swimming, 180 km cycling and 42 km running – the race draws athletes from more than 90 nations every year.
The route
The swim takes place in the Main-Danube Canal, before the 180 km bike leg heads out into the Franconian countryside around Roth – including the legendary Solar Hill, where tens of thousands of spectators cheer the athletes on. The closing marathon leads back to the finish in Roth's stadium, where finishers are welcomed by one of the biggest crowds in triathlon.
Key facts
- Distance: 226 km total (3.8 km swim, 180 km bike, 42.195 km run)
- Date: every July
- Location: Roth, near Nuremberg, Bavaria
- Notable: one of the oldest and largest long-distance triathlons in the world, athletes from more than 90 nations
Preparation
Over the full distance, pacing is what decides the day: push too hard on the bike, and you'll pay for it on the closing marathon. A structured training plan across all three disciplines, enough long endurance sessions, and a solid nutrition strategy for the July heat are key to a strong finish.
The Challenge Roth as a poster
If you have a combined GPX recording of your Challenge Roth (for example from Garmin's multisport mode), your poster shows the complete route across swim, bike and run. Upload the file and add your finishing time, date and a personal title. If you still need to export your activity, we show you step by step how to export the GPX file from Strava.
