What is the Berlin Marathon?
The BMW Berlin Marathon has been one of the world's most significant road races since its first edition in 1974, and is one of the six official World Marathon Majors. Every September, around 45,000 runners take to the start line. The course is considered one of the fastest in the world – several world records have been set here.
The route through Berlin
Start and finish are near the Victory Column in the Tiergarten. The course loops across the city – past the Kurfürstendamm, through Charlottenburg, Kreuzberg and Prenzlauer Berg – and ends with the legendary finish through the Brandenburg Gate. The flat profile with no notable climbs makes the course ideal for personal bests.

Preparation
Because the course is so fast, many runners deliberately race here for a new personal best. A realistic pacing plan is essential so the excitement at the start doesn't lead to going out too fast. September weather in Berlin is usually mild but can range from cool to warm depending on the year – a flexible layered outfit helps.
