What is the TCS New York City Marathon?

The New York City Marathon has been held since 1970 and is today, with more than 50,000 finishers, the largest marathon in the world by number of participants. It is one of the six official World Marathon Majors and traditionally takes place on the first Sunday in November.

The route through all 5 boroughs

The race starts on the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge on Staten Island and is the only major city marathon to run through all five boroughs of New York: from Staten Island through Brooklyn and Queens, briefly into the Bronx via the Willis Avenue Bridge, and finally back into Manhattan along First Avenue. The finish line sits right in the middle of Central Park.

Key facts

  • Distance: 42.195 km
  • Date: first Sunday in November
  • Start: Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, Staten Island
  • Finish: Central Park, Manhattan
  • Notable: the only Major marathon through all 5 New York boroughs, the world's largest marathon by finishers

Preparation

The course is hillier than its reputation suggests – especially the bridge ramps and the climbing first mile on the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge take their toll. The atmosphere along First Avenue in Manhattan is among the loudest in marathon running and can throw off your sense of pace. A well-thought-out pacing plan helps you avoid getting swept up in it. November weather in New York is usually cool, so a layering system for the start and finish pays off.

The NYC Marathon as a poster

Upload the GPX file of your New York City Marathon – from Strava, Garmin Connect or Polar – and turn it into your personal poster with all 5 boroughs, the distance, finishing time, date and your name. If you still need to export your activity, we show you step by step how to export the GPX file from Strava. No GPS tracking? There's also the New York Marathon Art Poster – purely typographic, with just your name, time and date.
