01 / The story

MARATHON NEW YORK.

Five boroughs, one city, one finish line in Central Park – no marathon in the world brings out a crowd like New York.

The New York City Marathon is one of the biggest and most emotional city marathons in the world. Founded in 1970 by Fred Lebow, the first edition ran entirely within Central Park – with just 127 starters.

In 1976 it became the legendary five-borough race: the course starts on Staten Island, crosses the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, and runs through Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Manhattan before finishing in Central Park. The shift from the silent Queensboro Bridge to the roaring crowds on First Avenue is one of the most emotional moments in marathon running.

Today the New York City Marathon is one of the six World Marathon Majors and, with well over 50,000 finishers, the largest marathon in the world.

Records & Numbers.

Since switching to the five-borough course in 1976, the New York City Marathon has grown into the largest marathon in the world – with around two million spectators lining the route.

As one of the six World Marathon Majors, the race draws elite and recreational runners from over 150 countries every November.

The route crosses five bridges and passes through all five boroughs before the final climb through Central Park to the finish – one of the most iconic finishes in world marathon running.
