02 / The story

MARATHON HAMBURG.

The Elbe, the Alster, harbour air – 26.2 miles through the Hanseatic city, and in the end the crowds carry you back to the Messe.

The Hamburg Marathon is Germany's biggest spring marathon. Every April since 1986 it has run through the Hanseatic city – with start and finish right at the Hamburg Messe, in the heart of the city between St. Pauli and Planten un Blomen park.

From there the course first heads through St. Pauli down to the Elbe and west along the harbour. Back in the city centre the Alster awaits: the route loops around the lake and then stretches far north to Ohlsdorf, before returning via Winterhude and the Alster towards the finish.

The course is flat and fast – and loud: along the Elbe, around the Alster and over the final kilometres to the Messe, the people of Hamburg line the streets and turn the race into a real city festival.

03 / Race DNA

Records & Numbers.

The first edition took place in 1986 as the Hanse Marathon. Since then the race has grown into one of Europe's big city marathons, drawing runners from all over the world to Hamburg every spring.

For many, Hamburg is the spring marathon: the April date fits perfectly after a winter of training, and the flat course is ideal for chasing a new personal best.

Alongside elite athletes, thousands of recreational runners line up every year – for many of them it is their very first marathon.
