What is the Paris Marathon?
The Marathon de Paris has been held since 1976 and is one of the largest and most popular city marathons in Europe. Every April, tens of thousands of runners set off from the heart of Paris.
The route through Paris
The start is on the Champs-Élysées, within sight of the Arc de Triomphe. The route runs via Place de la Concorde, along Rue de Rivoli past the Louvre and Notre-Dame, through the Bois de Vincennes in the east and later along the banks of the Seine to the Eiffel Tower. The final stretch passes through the Bois de Boulogne, with the finish on Avenue Foch near the Arc de Triomphe.
Key facts
- Distance: 42.195 km
- Date: April
- Start: Champs-Élysées
- Finish: Avenue Foch, near the Arc de Triomphe
- Notable: one of the largest city marathons in Europe, a route past Paris's best-known landmarks
Preparation
The course is mostly flat and fast, with a few exceptions such as the gentle climbs in the Bois de Vincennes and Bois de Boulogne. The dense crowds along the Champs-Élysées and the banks of the Seine give an extra boost, but can also push your early pace too high. April weather in Paris is changeable, ranging from cool to mild, so a flexible clothing plan for the start and finish is worth it.
The Paris Marathon as a poster
Upload the GPX file of your Paris Marathon – from Strava, Garmin Connect or Polar – and turn it into your personal poster with the route, distance, finishing time, date and your name. If you still need to export your activity, we show you step by step how to export the GPX file from Strava. No GPS tracking? There's also the Paris Marathon Art Poster – purely typographic, with just your name, time and date.
