What is the London Marathon?
The London Marathon has been one of the most prestigious road races in the world since its first edition in 1981, and is one of the six official World Marathon Majors. Every April, around 50,000 runners take to the start line – from elite professionals to costumed charity runners. Demand for a place is huge: most participants get in through the public ballot or a charity place.
The route through London
The race starts in Blackheath in south-east London and heads through Greenwich, passing the famous Cutty Sark at the 10 km mark. Via the Isle of Dogs and Canary Wharf, runners reach the halfway point at Tower Bridge – one of the most emotional spots on the course, where the crowds are at their thickest. The second half follows the Thames along the Embankment, past the London Eye and Big Ben, to the finish on The Mall right in front of Buckingham Palace.
Key facts
- Distance: 42.195 km
- Date: April
- Start: Blackheath / Greenwich
- Finish: The Mall, in front of Buckingham Palace
- Notable: one of the six World Marathon Majors, huge crowds along the entire route
Preparation
The course itself is flat and fast – many runners set personal bests here. The biggest challenge is the noise: at spots like the Cutty Sark and Tower Bridge, the roar of the crowd is deafening, which can throw off your sense of pace. If you're chasing a PB, set a clear pacing plan beforehand and don't get carried away by the euphoria on the roadside. April weather in London can range from cool and rainy to mild, so keep your clothing choices flexible on the start line.
The London Marathon as a poster
Upload the GPX file of your London Marathon – from Strava, Garmin Connect or Polar – and turn it into your personal poster with the route, distance, finishing time, date and your name. If you still need to export your activity, we show you step by step how to export the GPX file from Strava. No GPS tracking? There's also the London Marathon Art Poster – purely typographic, with just your name, time and date.
