What is the Cologne Marathon?
The Cologne Marathon is the big autumn marathon on the Rhine and one of Germany's best-known city marathons. The route runs right through the cathedral city – past Cologne Cathedral, through the old town and repeatedly along the banks of the Rhine.
The route through Cologne
The race follows long stretches of the Rhine, passes through Cologne's old town and offers open views of Cologne Cathedral, the city's landmark. The flat route along the riverbank makes the Cologne Marathon both a fast and a scenically impressive run.
Key facts
- Distance: 42.195 km
- Date: autumn
- Route: Rhine riverbank, old town, past Cologne Cathedral
- Notable: one of the big autumn marathons on the Rhine
Preparation
Autumn in Cologne often brings cool but stable running conditions – ideal for personal bests. Since the course runs largely flat along the Rhine, it pays off to settle into an even race pace from the start rather than getting carried away by the atmosphere around the cathedral early on.
