01 / The story

PASSO PORDOI.

The Pordoi is not a hard pass. It is a beautiful pass. And sometimes that is the rarer thing.

The Passo Pordoi lies in the heart of the Dolomites, on the border between the provinces of Trentino and South Tyrol. At 2,239 metres it is the highest point of the famous Sella Ronda – one of the most beautiful circular routes in the Alps, linking four passes and four valleys. The Pordoi massif, with the Sass Pordoi at 2,950 metres, rises above the pass on the north side like a vertical Dolomite wall.

The ascent from the Fassa Valley from Canazei is not technically demanding: 9.2 kilometres, 637 metres of altitude, 6.9 percent average gradient. The 33 hairpins are evenly distributed, the asphalt good. It is a pass accessible to cyclists of all levels and yet plays an outstanding role in professional cycling.

What makes the Pordoi unique is not its difficulty but its setting. At the summit a panorama opens onto the most important Dolomite groups: Sella, Marmolada, Langkofel and Rosengarten. No other pass in the Dolomites offers this concentration of iconic mountain formations in such a compact space.

The cable-car station to the Sass Pordoi is located directly at the summit. Those with energy left after the ride can ascend to 2,950 metres in 15 minutes and see the panorama from above.

Tour history & Records.

The Pordoi is the most frequently included Dolomite pass in the Giro d'Italia. It has appeared in the race programme over 40 times – more than any other pass in the Alps. In 1973 the Giro named the mountain points award at the highest point of the race after Fausto Coppi, the five-time Giro winner. This award has been called the "Cima Coppi" ever since – and the Pordoi was the first pass to carry it.

The summit is decorated with memorial plaques and statues of Coppi. The café at the top is one of the most well-known rest stops in Alpine cycling tourism.

In winter the Pordoi is part of the Sellaronda ski area. In summer it becomes a meeting point for road cyclists from across Europe riding the classic Dolomite circuits.
