01 / The story

COL DE L'ISERAN.

Seven metres higher than the Stelvio. Less famous – but those who stand at the top understand why altitude alone is a statement.

The Col de l'Iseran at 2,764 metres is the highest paved mountain pass in the Alps – seven metres higher than the Stelvio. It lies in the Savoie department and connects the Arc valley (Maurienne) with the Isère valley (Tarentaise). The road was built between 1930 and 1937 and is passable from July to October.

The ascent from Val d'Isère – the ski resort that gives the pass its name – is the classic road-cycling route: 14.5 kilometres, 910 metres of altitude, 6.5 percent average gradient. The final five kilometres lie above 2,500 metres, in a world of rock, snow and sky. The view over the Graian Alps and Mont Blanc is unmatched.

From Bessans the ascent via the Val d'Arc is considerably longer and produces the total distance of 47.5 kilometres shown in the profile. This variant passes through the romantic Val Cluzon and the high plateau of Bonneval-sur-Arc, considered one of the most beautiful mountain villages in France.

At the summit stands a chapel from 1939, the Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-l'Iseran. It has become one of the most iconic images of the pass – a white chapel against a backdrop of scree and snowfields. The Iseran is not a pass for record times. It is a pass for the silence that only altitude brings.

Tour history & Records.

The Iseran was included in the Tour de France for the first time in 1938 – just one year after the road was completed. Gino Bartali was the first to cross it. The Tour has used the pass only sporadically since then, as its accessibility in July is not guaranteed.

2019, Stage 19: Julian Alaphilippe was leading the race on the Iseran when the stage was stopped due to a landslide and flooding. The result was taken at the Iseran – securing Egan Bernal as the effective Tour winner. It was one of the most extraordinary stages of the modern Tour.

As the highest point of the 2019 Tour, the Iseran was the "Cime de la Tour". The road is blocked in some years well into June or even July – the pass waits for no one.
