Many pilgrims begin their journey in the French Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. On the first day they go through the Pyrenees to the Spanish monastery of Roncesvalles, the beginning of the province of Navarre. The Camino Frances then continues through the northern Spanish provinces of Navarra, La Rioja, Burgos, Palencia, León, Lugo and A Coruña.
